Cinder & Petr Vrba: Fire Like Fire (UK/CZ) • Massimo Pupillo & Rouilleux (IT/CZ)

A cult figure of post-industrial music, Cinder, performs in the duo Fire Like Fire with improvising trumpeter Petr Vrba, while Massimo Pupillo, bassist of the legendary Italian band Zu, teams up with distinctive singer-songwriter Rouilleux. A joint set featuring all four musicians is not out of the question to close the evening.

Fire Like Fire is a collaboration between vocalist/composer Cinder and Czech improviser Petr Vrba. Cinder is the driving force behind the cult project Cindytalk, which evolved from unconventional goth into a more abstract sound and was signed to the influential label Editions Mego. She also appeared in the supergroup This Mortal Coil and in Becoming Animal alongside Massimo Pupillo. Vrba is an active figure on the Czech improvisation scene, both as a musician and organizer, unafraid of crossing genre boundaries—whether through the Alternativa Festival, the Prague Improvisation Orchestra, or bands like Banausoi, Poisonous Frequencies, and IQ+1. Their performances explore dark, massive electronic textures layered with Cinder’s majestic vocals and Vrba’s lyrical trumpet. They describe their music as a sonic psychogeography of hostile terrain—expect anything but surface-level sound.

Following last year's teaser performance, Massimo Pupillo and Rouilleux return with a full-length set. Known primarily as the bassist of Italian noise/free-jazz-core trio Zu, Pupillo's range extends far beyond, with countless collaborations across genres—from Thurston Moore, David Tibet, Mike Patton, and Peter Brötzmann to Bon Iver—spanning drone, dub, and contemporary classical music. Luboš Rezek, aka Rouilleux, explores unconventional songwriting infused with ambient and noise influences. His music moves between strong melodic ideas and structural freedom, carried by his exceptional voice. The duo began working together last year and are currently preparing a new recording—likely to lean into ambient moods with hints of Coil-like mystical psychedelia.
