Grencsó / Mezei / Hock / Miklós Quartet (HU)

A quartet that spontaneously blends jazz and authentic Hungarian folklore with free improvisation. A group of top-tier musicians led by the renowned saxophonist and clarinetist István Grencsó, creating a magical musical symbiosis.

István Grencsó is a musician who, alongside Mihály Dresch and György Szabados, stands as one of Hungary’s most significant jazz innovators, whose music has shaped and continues to shape not only contemporary Hungarian jazz. This music is particularly remarkable due to the strong and uniquely transformed influence of original Hungarian and, in a broader sense, Eastern European folk music. Grencsó entered the music scene in the late 1970s, forming the Masina Jazz Group. He later became a member of the Dresch Quartet and began collaborating with the legendary pianist György Szabados in his band MAKUZ. In 1985, he founded Kollektíva, a group based on the regular rotation of various musicians, which remains his main musical project to this day. The group’s variability allows Grencsó to explore an almost limitless range of musical expressions and styles, providing the perfect platform to realize his inventive ideas. His collaborators include not only jazz and rock musicians but also DJs, electronic experimenters, classical musicians, and folk performers. Throughout his career, he has worked with musicians such as Ken Vandermark, Ab Baars, Peter Kowald, Tobias Delius, and Peter Brötzmann. He was also a member of the famous alternative rock band Kampec Dolores.

Szilárd Mezei is a violist from Vojvodina, Serbia. He has been involved with folk music since childhood, later studying violin and composition. He focuses on contemporary improvised music and the exploration of relationships between improvisation and composition. He has collaborated with a wide range of world-renowned musicians, including Joëlle Léandre, Hamid Drake, Joe Fonda, Phil Minton, Charles Gayle, Frank Gratkowski, and Vasco Trilla.

Ernö Hock is one of the most versatile Hungarian double bass players of the past two decades, bridging the worlds of jazz, folk, rock, and free improvisation. He is a member of several Budapest-based bands, such as the genre-defying Zuboly, funk-rockers The Qualitons, and neo-psychedelic Decolonize Your Mind Society. He was a member of the legendary Dresch Quartet and has collaborated with Béla Ágoston.

Szilveszter Miklós, a drummer, is one of the key figures on the current improvisational and free-jazz scene in Budapest. Originally trained in violin, he was later captivated by percussion instruments. Despite his youth, he has already had the opportunity to play with numerous musicians from the European and global improv scenes, such as Ken Vandermark, Han Bennink, Matija Schellander, and Alexander von Schlippenbach. In 2020, his duo LP with legendary free-jazz saxophonist Peter Brötzmann was released.
