Svět mezi námi / World Between Us

Passion, obsession with art, and unwavering determination to pursue her dreams. Photographer Marie Tomanová arrived in New York as an au-pair and broke through in the highly competitive world of the city's photography scene.

Director Marie Dvořáková followed her with a camera over the course of five years, resulting in the feature documentary Svět mezi námi (World Between Us). The film captures Tomanová’s early successes in the US and her rapid rise, as well as the strong personal and artistic partnership between the photographer and art historian Thomas Beachdel, without whose support she may not have fully developed her talent. Thanks to the director's unique approach and the remarkable openness of the main subjects, we become part of the story of the American Dream fulfilled. Both Maries share the experience of leaving for the US, building a career in a new environment, and searching for roots, identity, and home.

Today, Marie Tomanová photographs for leading global brands such as Nike, Gucci, and Meta, as well as for magazines like GQ, New York Magazine, Vogue CS, and The New York Times. She exhibits in New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Berlin and has published several successful photographic books.

The film was shot in various locations in New York, Mikulov, and Prague. A significant part of the film is dedicated to Marie Tomanová's own photographs, through which the audience follows her artistic journey and witnesses intimate moments of her creative process.
